About Metafoodx
What is Metafoodx?
Metafoodx is a food operations intelligence platform. The Metron AI Scanner and Mobile App capture what your kitchen produces, what guests actually eat, what is left over, and what ends up on the plate.
That data turns into everyday decisions: how much to prep, when to replenish, when to stop producing, and which portions or recipes need a second look.
Is Metafoodx just a food waste tracker?
No. Most food waste tools start at the bin, so they show what was thrown away but not what was produced or eaten.
Metafoodx tracks the full food journey, from prep to production, service, consumption, leftovers, and plate waste. Waste reduction is one result. Lower food cost, more accurate production, and more consistent quality are the others.
Who uses Metafoodx?
Foodservice teams that produce food at volume, including college and university dining, corporate dining, healthcare, contract foodservice, hotels and buffets, clubs, stadiums and venues, and catering operations.
It is used by chefs and kitchen managers on the floor, and by operations, finance, procurement, and sustainability leaders who need visibility across sites.
Has Metafoodx received any industry recognition?
Yes. Metafoodx received the 2025 NRA Kitchen Innovation Award, was named to Fast Company's Next Big Things in Tech for 2025 and the 2025 FOODTECH 500, and received a 2025 Silicon Valley San Jose AI Innovation Grant.
How It Works
How does the Metron AI Scanner work?
Staff place a pan or plate on the Metron AI Scanner. In one scan, the device identifies the food and pan, measures weight and temperature, and checks visual quality, using embedded GPU computing and vision, depth, and infrared sensors.
Results show on the device right away and sync instantly to the cloud dashboard.
What can Metafoodx track?
Metafoodx works across four modes:
- Consumption Tracking: what is produced, consumed, and left over for each menu item at the service line.
- Back-of-House Waste: prep loss, trim, spoilage, and production waste before food reaches the guest.
- Post-Consumer Plate Waste: what guests leave on their plates, with optional guest feedback.
- Catering Mode: production and overproduction for each catering event, tracked by BEO number.
Used together, they show where a problem starts, so teams fix the cause instead of guessing.
How accurate is the food recognition?
Metafoodx recognizes menu items with 95% accuracy from day one, using LLM auto-labeling based on your daily menu plan. It can tell apart look-alike foods, such as vanilla yogurt and sour cream.
Our patented Vision Transformer AI keeps learning from your operation, so accuracy improves over time.
Does my staff need to enter data manually?
No. Staff scan and the system automatically identifies the food, weight, and temperature. Assigning where leftovers go (reuse, compost, or donate) takes one tap on the tablet.
How does plate waste tracking work?
Guests place their plate on a post-consumer Metron AI Scanner when they return it. AI-powered 3D vision records the leftover weight and identifies the main leftover item in about two seconds.
Guests can leave optional feedback, and the screen can show a running weekly waste total and custom messages to support sustainability programs.
Does Metafoodx monitor food temperature and freshness?
Yes. An infrared sensor records food temperature on every scan. Freshness Alerts start a countdown when an item goes out for service and turn orange, then red, to remind staff when to check or replace it. Timers can be set by item, category, or venue.
What does the Metafoodx Mobile App do?
The Mobile App (iOS) gives chefs and managers real-time visibility from anywhere in the venue:
- Home: a daily snapshot and live scanning activity.
- Live View: which menu items are running low and which are moving slowly.
- Scan Log: recent scans with images.
- Manage: download and share reports from your phone.
It uses your existing Metafoodx login, with SSO supported.
Can Metafoodx track catering and special events?
Yes. Catering Mode tracks production and overproduction for each event using its BEO number. Results appear on the dashboard in real time, and the event history is searchable, so you can plan the next similar event using what actually happened at the last one.
Setup & Hardware
How hard is Metafoodx to set up?
Metafoodx is plug-and-play. The Metron AI Scanner works out of the box, menu items are recognized from day one without training, and devices calibrate themselves automatically every morning. Our Customer Success team helps configure your menus, venues, and reports.
Do I need a Metron AI Scanner at every station?
No. Most operations place Metron AI Scanners at their highest-volume points, then use the Mobile App to extend coverage to satellite kitchens, catering areas, temporary service points, and lower-volume locations.
Does Metafoodx work across multiple locations?
Yes. Global View lets institution-level users compare performance and trends across every site in one dashboard, so you can spot outliers and share what works between locations.
Reporting & Forecasting
What reports does Metafoodx provide?
Metafoodx includes an Executive Insights dashboard, a Scan Log with images, Consumption and Overproduction Summaries, and a Weekly Report that can be emailed automatically on the schedule you choose.
The Weekly Report ranks the five menu items driving the most overproduction cost at each venue and gives a prioritized action list for the week ahead.
How does Metafoodx forecast production?
Metafoodx's AI forecasting engine combines consumption and waste data with menu cycles, guest counts, day of week, weather, special events, and station popularity to generate production plans automatically.
Managers can review and edit each plan, then compare forecast to actual results to keep improving.
What alerts can Metafoodx send?
Overproduction Alerts email your team when an item or category goes over a threshold you set. Freshness Alerts remind staff to check or rotate pans during service. You can also post custom messages directly to the Metron AI Scanner tablets.
Can Metafoodx support our sustainability reporting?
Yes. The Sustainability Report converts tracked overproduction into environmental impact metrics, including CO2e, water saved, and car-miles avoided, and can be downloaded as a PDF. Measured data gives you a documented baseline instead of estimates.
Integrations
What systems does Metafoodx integrate with?
Metafoodx offers two-way integration with kitchen and menu management systems, including Jamix, Parsley, and Illumia, as well as POS and ERP platforms.
Planned menus can flow into Metafoodx, and measured production, consumption, and leftover data can flow back. The exact data exchanged depends on your systems and configuration.
Results & Getting Started
What results can we expect?
Metafoodx has delivered up to 12X ROI in real operations. Teams typically see value from producing closer to actual demand, cutting overproduction, and catching prep and quality issues earlier.
Results depend on your operation, configuration, and consistent scanning, which is why we start by establishing a baseline with your team.
How is Metafoodx different from other food waste systems?
Many systems measure food after it has already been thrown away. Metafoodx also measures what was produced and what guests actually ate, while service is still running.
That means a chef can see an item slowing down and hold the next batch, instead of finding out tomorrow in a waste report.
